Powerlifting comprises of three disciplines, Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. People wishing to compete in the sport can either choose one of the disciplines (Single Lift), or all three combined (Full Power).

The first RAF Powerlifting competition was held in 1988 by the RAF Powerlifting Association. Since then it has become a Recognised Sport by the Directorate of RAF Sport and has a well-established committee and structure.

The RAF Powerlifting Association aims to promote the sport on all levels. For those interested in taking up the sport, a Novice Training Camp and Development Training Camp are held annually. Taster days are also held at various RAF Stations around the UK. There is an annual RAF Powerlifting Championship where lifters can test themselves in a competitive, but friendly environment, and can qualify to compete on the national stage. There is also the opportunity to represent the RAF at the UK Armed Forces Championship and the annual Overseas Tour. Coaching and referee courses are available for anyone wishing to develop themselves and support the sport.
