The Royal Air Force Rifle Association was founded in 1921 with the object (as expressed at the time) of ‘promoting interest in small arms shooting for Service purposes by means of individual and collective competitions framed as far as possible to induce practice in methods which will lead to increased efficiency’. Since 1946, when it became the Royal Air Force Small Arms Association (RAFSAA), it has also been responsible for sporting shooting disciplines, as well as competition shooting with Service weapons. Proficiency in small arms is axiomatic for any military organisation. It is the most fundamental of military skills that not only saves our lives and those of our comrades, but also invariably provides that battlewinning edge. As recent operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere have proven, this is as true today as it was in 1921. Marksmanship honed by competition shooting, whether it be with Service or sporting weapons, thus contributes to military efficiency. In short, it wins battles – as members of our Association will testify personally.
